Madaraka Day (Independence Day)

It is celebrated on the 1st of June his dayriver commemorates the first time the Kenyan flag was raised and our national anthem played. This day in 1963 was the culmination of years of national struggles which began as early as the 1920s. This process entailed both diplomacy by the likes of Kenyatta, and guerrilla warfare by Dedan Kimathi, Waruhi Itote and other Mau Mau freedom fighters. Besides it being a day off from work, decorative buntings with the national flag, and the national address by the president, it is a moment to pause and recall the lives that were lost and the sacrifices that were made so that Kenyans could truly enjoy the fruit of their labour, and so that we could determine our destiny as a Nation.
